A sunlit Horsetail Falls is a rare and majestic sight. It appears at sunset for only 2 weeks out of the year. This spectacular site occurs because of the alignment of the setting sun with the face of El Capitan. El Capitan is shaded and the water fall shoots out beyond the shadow into the last rays of the sun. The sun strikes the falls lighting them with the warm rays of the sunset. The waterfall lights up with a glow reminiscent of flowing lava. This is truly one of the wonders of the natural world.
I've been wanting to witness and capture the majesty of Horsetail falls for a few years, but the timing has never worked out. This year however, I am fortunate to have a couple days where I can travel to Yosemite to do the shoot. President's day weekend was my first opportunity and here is the result. This upcoming weekend should be the best time to photograph the falls, and so I'm hoping to go back to try my luck again.
