Last Light on Horsetail Falls

Posted by CW McGowen (Morgan Hill, United States) on 20 February 2016 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

What a difference a few minutes can make. In sunset and sunrise photography the difference can be dramatic.

This image was taken 6 minutes and 28 seconds after the previous image in this blog and the changes are astounding. Here are a few of the differences to look for: 1) The blue hour is approaching and the sky is correspondingly darker and the snow is much bluer. 2) The direct light on El Capitan now almost entirely misses the rocks and is almost exclusively lighting Horsetail Falls. 3) You can appreciate the absence of light on El Capitan as the contrast is lower and the foreground trees are now brighter and greener, a result of the light exposure of both now being much closer. 4) The light of the sun is far warmer which can be seen in the red color of the falls and the few rocks it still hits or where it is reflected by the falls.

These last moments of sunlight where only the falls are lit and the falls turn a dark red is the gotcha photo for this event. Hope you like the result.

Indeed you have highlighted the changes superbly and it is an interesting comparison to the previous capture. The water flow with its red glow looks like the blood of the Earth...

Great eye for photography,
Mom came to spend a couple of weeks with me and she mentioned your name this morning. A couple of clicks later I found you doing well in CA. I hope you are as blessed as I. Call me sometimes i would love to catch up on old times and new ones. 225-202-7546
